American Idol - A Major Shocker and The Final 3!!

In order to cut short my agony, I did today what I've never done before in American Idol Season 5 - I checked the results early.

And what I expected was to see the confirmation of what to me was a foregone conclusion, after last night's disastrous performance - Katherine McPhee's exit.

What I found completely SHOCKED me.

CHRIS DAUGHTRY HAS BEEN ELIMINATED FROM AMERICAN IDOL!!!

Gasp! Gasp! Gasp! :(

(The last time I was this shocked was when La Toya London got excluded in the top 4 of American Idol 3! And she was only only 2nd best to Fantasia! But this time, the best got excluded!)

Mixed feelings on this one. A deserving winner of American Idol has been kicked out - though I think he wouldn't have a problem getting a solo album deal or having multiple offers to join some of the more established rock bands around, like Creed and Fuel.

It's very sad, indeed. The hazards of a talent contest, via SMS. I can't explain it - his choice of songs were not all that bad (albeit the 2nd song didn't really suit him) and his rendition of both, were pretty good.

A thought passed through my mind - has American Idol 5 turned into the last Akademi Fantasia? Will they be creating their own American "Mawi" - probably in the form of Taylor Hicks?

And then a sense of relief - that Katherine McPhee is bloody lucky and is still in the top 3!

She's got one more rung to make it to the top 2 and she's really got to outperform Elliot next week (although I'd prefer Taylor to be kicked out, though this is not likely to happen). I hope she uses her head on the choice of songs for the next one and play to her strength - ballads and jazzy pieces.

Even one more week's opportunity will not mean anything if she doesn't use her head and control her nerves. I hope she will give it her all.

All she has to do, is not be the worst performer for next week (which is what she was, for this week). She seems to have the support base and that, she's got to be grateful for. Not many people can perform badly in 2 consecutive songs in American Idol and get away with not being eliminated. She was just extremely lucky.

No more surprises, America. Please. Chris's exit is a hard enough lesson.

Otherwise, you'll end up having the first season where neither of the top 2 finalists, will be selling albums.

At least, our own Malaysian Mawi is selling albums like hotcakes - based almost purely, on aura and personality alone.

I don't think you could do that with a male vocalist in America - unless they're rappers.

Sigh***....American Idol is just not worth watching anymore. Right on.

The only consolation for Chris fans as you rightly pointed out, is that Chris Daughtry will probably have a good music career ahead of him regardless. This is because he will not be bound by stringent American Idol 5 contract and will be free to join real rock bands whom need a strong vocalist. I actually think he will have a more successful career than Katherine, Taylor or Elliot combined.

Know what Stingray? I do think Katherine will eventually win the title of American Idol. While there's no doubt she can sing (as all the musicians have pointed out), the lady lacks depth of personality. She will win regardless however as she fits the boring predictable mould that voters go for - all American prom queen type - I can just so picture her singing the Star Spangled Banner for President Bush in his next presidential victory!

But Stingray, as you have seen in the careers of fallen Idols like Ruben Stoddard and Fantasia, this may not necessarily be the best thing for you to wish happen to her. Kelly Clarkson, the original Idol - is only doing well now since she's totally diassociated herself from the Idol mould and broke away from the contract.

Maybe its not such a great thing to be an American Idol after all?

Me....I'm hoping that Taylor Hicks wins for American Idol to get the slap in the face that it truly deserves....

Darn it! Chris is out? It should have been Katherine!! No! No! Though I'm glad Taylor is still in the top 3.

Then again, you just had to spoil it eh? :P

Based on last night's performance, I agree with you. But I'm still rooting for her. :)

Babe:

Better Elliot than Taylor. Anytime of the day. Short term or long term.

I'm not sure she'll win - Taylor's doing a "Mawi" wave over and leading the "aura" tide against the people with the real talent, like the other 3.

But all she needs is top be in the top 2. And then she'll land the recording deal and she's got a shot at greatness.

As for Ruben, Fantasia and Kelly - my previous explanation stands.

It's not enough to have vocal talent nowdays - it's the whole package and good looks and great physical attributes is a definite advantage.

Key: It's got to sound and look good on music video. Learn from Beyonce Knowles and Usher.

It's not the mould that matters - it's the shooting star. If you've got what it takes, you will break the mould.

Kelly's got it and I'm willing to bet that if she gets a recording deal with good songs, Kat will do just as well.

But you may just get your wish on Taylor winning. And it will be a slap on American Idol's face.

It wasn't me!! I thought she should have been kicked out based on last night's performance.

But sometimes, just like Arsenal over Spurs - you get a lucky break. Sometimes, luck is 50% of everything.

But yes, between the 3, I think Kat should win - provided she performs to her true potential.

UPDATE - I just saw the elimination on TV just now.

Chris and Katherine was in the bottom 2.

Chris looking quitely confident and Katherine bracing for the announcement that would determine her exit.

I guess she was preparing for a graceful exit, one without tears.

And when Ryan made the announcement that Chris was going home - Katherine gaped in shock and disbelief.

(And the expression of shock was also obvious on the faces of Elliot and Taylor)

And the blank and shocked expression on Chris's face, was just too painful to watch.

And the shocked expression remained for a good few minutes, too. I was moved, just looking at him.

He really did not expect to be eliminated - not after last night's performance. He looked lost for words.

The crowd booed in disapproval, shock and despair.

But such is competition by democracy - you don't always get it right. (Look at the fact that Bush is there for his 2nd term of Presidency)

And boy, did America get it wrong this time. BIG TIME.

Can they do further wrong? Let's see in the next 2 weeks.

You're entitled to your opinion.

And I did say that Kat deserved to be eliminated, after last night. No bias there. She sucked last night. Agreed.

As for my pre-occupation with Siti Nurhaliza, she's the best selling Malaysian artiste in Malaysia and Indonesia. And she's been at the top of her game for 8 years.

That speaks for itself - even without my so-called bias.

As for being a talent show judge - I'll probably never have the opportunity and we'll probably never find out.

And yes, I have a thing for pretty faces. Doesn't the rest of the consumer world? (When was the last time you saw an ugly Revlon model?)

But it doesn't override my judgement on fairness and talent.

I've agreed with your points. What else do you want? I don't control American audiences, you know. (Or Malaysian ones, for that matter)

Unless this is just a personal attack on me, I suggest you write to me and take this offline.

And if this is personal, please get in the queue.

told ya that AI5 isn't worth watching anymore. Nahhh, it came from my frustration cos chris got kicked out. Stupid Americans.
I checked the result as early as 9.30 am this morning. heheh. Cannot la wait until 8.00pm.

I am totally agreeing with you. Taylor is the Mawi of USA. But most definitely the better singer than mawi himself.

Anyway, by the rate this is going, the top two will be Elliot and Taylor? If that's the case, I'm rooting for Elliot. He sings like an angel. But if Katharine is in the top 2 with Elliot, I'm rooting for Kath.. ermm, prolly Elliot. Nahh, I vote Kath..hmm but Elliot is blossoming these days...I can't decide.

Aisey man - you are worse than Pixie lah. :) First on the results button!

I'm not sure that Taylor is a better singer than Mawi. (Especially when Simon points out that Taylor sounds like a karaoke singer).

We'll know for sure when Mawi sings English songs and Taylor does Malay songs. ;)

I think Taylor will be the next American Idol. The only issue now is who will join him in the finals - whether it's Katherine or Elliot.

It's 50% performance and 50% (voting) luck, for next week.

Give or take, the support base for both Elliot and Katherine, should be about the same right now.

Neither has any particularly strong advantage here.

**CONFIRMATION FROM FOX NEWS TODAY ON FUEL ROCK BAND OFFER FOR CHRIS****

'American Idol' Reject Chris Daughtry's Offered Spot in Rock Band
Thursday, May 11, 2006

RALEIGH, North Carolina — Getting booted from "American Idol" this week is going to launch the music career he's dreamed about his entire life, Chris Daughtry said Thursday.

He didn't have to wait long — hours later he was offered a job with the band Fuel.

"I'm a songwriter myself," the 26-year-old told reporters Thursday, one day after viewers shocked just about everyone and voted him off the TV talent show. "To be able to launch my own career would be a dream" come true.

Daughtry, who dreamed of becoming a rock star while working in the service department at a Greensboro car dealership, said he is considering whether to pursue fronting an established rock band or launching a solo career.

Then Fuel made its offer. Bass player Jeff Abercrombie and guitarist Carl Bell made their pitch on the TV show "Extra."

"Chris, if you are watching, we've talked about this before, and if you want to entertain it again we'll take it and go," Abercrombie said.

The buzz around Daughtry for weeks has been that he could end up the band's lead singer. He performed the band's song "Hemorrhage" on a recent "Idol" show.

His wife, Deanna Daughtry, said she's not sure which option he should pursue, but either way music is all he's ever wanted to do.

"He's got a lot on him and hopefully he'll have a lot of wisdom there," she said. "The public forgets so fast about those idols once they get off the show. I just hope they don't forget about Chris."

Many observers thought the shaved-head rocker from McLeansville would win this year's competition.

On Tuesday's show, Daughtry performed two Elvis Presley songs. His rendition of "Suspicious Minds" drew strong reviews from judges. Paula Abdul said, "See you in the finals."

Judge Simon Cowell said his second song — "A Little Less Conversation" — was "flat" and not as good as the first performance.

Daughtry, who said he doesn't regret anything he did on the show, said he was shocked to get voted off because so many people had picked him to win — which may have led overconfident fans to not bother casting votes.

"They didn't have to vote as hard, and I think that was the downfall, in my opinion," he said, refusing to critique the other three finalists. "It was definitely a gut-wrenching moment and I was not expecting it, even a little bit."

Some fans around his hometown fear their votes were mistakenly credited to one of the other contestants because they'd get another hopeful's voice thanking them for the call instead of Daughtry's, family friend Tracey Adams said.

One music industry expert said it definitely shouldn't be the end for Daughtry, who has a great opportunity to cash in as a solo artist because of the equity he's built on the show.

"I think he should definitely pursue that at this point," said Jeff Walker, president of AristoMedia, a Nashville-based company that develops and promotes music artists. "He's got a lot of people that like him."

"American Idol" airs on FOX, which is owned by the parent company of FOXNews.com.
