Say It Again, Waldo!

The meaning of success by Ralph Waldo Emerson, American poet and philosopher:-

"To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
to leave the world a little better;
whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is the meaning of success."

I share Emerson's thoughts on this one. I could not have said it better, so I'll let his words do the talking, this time.

Yes and there are mistakes that we make that we wish we can undo, despite repeated apologies.

But sometimes, in life, you don't get a second chance.

If honest mistakes made all people, false - then there'd be no real friends for anyone.

Purple Fingers:

I don't think it comes naturally to most people. It's something that requires effort.

But the cost of not doing it, is that you become cynical too quickly.

It's hard to wade through life when you have to avoid everyone you don't like - it's not conducive to community-building.

Only God can judge people.

We can only choose the values which we approve of (which we would teach our children) and those that we don't - we at worst, tolerate.

Others have a right to live by their own values. And we must respect that, even if it contradicts ours (as long as it's not criminal)

But truthfully, we can't avoid an element of judgement in everything.

Even religion and morality stands on the platform of judgement - the ability to distinguish between right and wrong - is an exercise of judgement.

For as long as there are things which involve measurement, you will exercise some form of judgement.

The only difference is, the degree in which you express it outward. You can say it out or you can keep it in your mind.

Agreed. Sometimes, it's both the head and the heart.

And don't worry about it - I think everyone has failed around that corner before. You'd have to be immortal not to.

And yes, the "ditto" comes first. :)
